Hadn’t looked at this thread before.
I just thought I’d make some observations which may be of interest.
The senior politicians in the Isle of Man do get Knighthoods once they’ve achieved the top job, done it reasonably well for a few years, etc, etc.
Yet Channel Island politicians don’t get Knighthoods. That Top Gong just didn’t go to Reg and Plausibility Pierre – just as it won’t go to Big Frank – just as it won’t go to Teflon Terry, when he takes over.
Why should this be?
Why do the IoM top-dogs get the K – but Channel Island politicians don’t?
I know the answer to this question.
Sure, in the ordinary run of things, there’d be some politicians who they wouldn’t even contemplate giving a K to – for example, to those who may seem a bit dodgy on some grounds. Likewise, it would be a simple impossibility for them to give a K to some frightful scum-bag prole like me. (Unless, of course, I could “donate” half-a-million quid to the Labour Party)
But there is a more definitive reason as to why Jersey politicians never get K’s.
The Bailiff’s have always vetoed it.
These kinds of awards are only given out after “soundings” are taken from amongst the usual suspects; chief amongst these in Jersey has always been the Bailiff of the day.
They have always stopped politicians getting K’s – because it would place the politician in question into the same social category – the same stature – as the Bailiff.
And one just couldn’t possibly have such a frightful state of affairs occurring, could one?
A mere politician? Elevated into the same social category as the Bailiffs? Dear oh dear. Simply an intolerable idea.
If an elected representative of the people were to be seen to enter that high realm – as well as offending the snobbishness of the Bailiff – it could also be seen to seriously weaken the already very tenuous and invented claim the Bailiff makes for being the civic head of Jersey.
So, Big Frank – or any other Jersey representative of the great unwashed – getting a K?
No chance – because the Bailiff wouldn’t let it happen.
