Time for the Constables

http://www.thisisjersey.com/2008/09/17/and-now-its-the-constables-turn/

AFTER last night’s Senatorial nominations, the Constables get their turn tonight.

Nomination meetings are being held in nine parish halls for candidates for Constable this evening. The elections are being moved to a single day to coincide with the Senatorial election. It is hoped that this will get more voters to turn out to vote for their parish Constables.

But not all nine posts are going to be contested. St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft, Grouville Constable Dan Murphy and St John Constable Graeme Butcher have refused to stand down and fight their seat again. All 12 Constables agreed initially to step down, but only on the basis of having their terms extended to four years. When the States reversed that decision last year, the three rebel Constables changed their minds.

Of the parishes where the sitting Constables have agreed to curtail their terms, contested elections are expected in St Mary, St Lawrence and St Peter, and it has been rumoured that there will be a contested election featuring two candidates in St Clement. The meetings in St Brelade, St Clement, St Lawrence and St Saviour start at 7.30 pm, and the meetings in St Martin, St Mary, St Ouen, St Peter and Trinity start at 8 pm.

You may be right, but if they were to be excluded, would that mean even fewer people would want to stand for Constable?

These people put themselves forward for a time consuming and difficult job. If others are too lazy to run in competition then that's their problem, and if anything its laziness thats the "Jersey way". Why on earth blame those who are re-elected to continue the work?

Respect to you for trying in St Helier, Alvin, however I got the impression you were only doing it so Crowcroft was not elected unopposed. Got to be in it 100% surely?

JERSEY SPUD.

Challenging simon put me on the political scene. Of course it wasn't easy putting my self right in the deep end. But i have learnt a hell of a lot from the experience. and your absolutely right. Unless as a candidate your 100 % committed you ain't going to make it. I know one thing for sure. If 100 people say they will vote for you count that as 1 vote.

The JDA banner let you down.  I seriously reckon it would have been closer if you had been an independent.  Geoff Southern has been around making the same non-existent promises for far too long.

He may not realise it himself but he is dead wood now.

Should i stand for deputy in November it will be as an independent.
I don't want to be put into a box, or labeled as such. And your right Simon played on the idea of the jda would be running the parish , which could not be further than the truth.
My sites are set on taking out Guy DE faye .And i really want to run tts.

We have discussed party politics a lot on here and we have heard from ex members of parties, who have said similar things, in that you get one person trying to take control, this ends up with internal arguing, and all of a sudden the whole thing implodes.

Personally, I would agree that you may have got more votes in January if you had been an independent.

I think you could prove popular as a town deputy because you run a local business and when you say you will listen to people problems, I actually think you will.

Alvin,

I hope you do "take De Faye out". And not for dinner at your pizza restaurant, either  ;D Not a pleasant mental image.

I haven't got the foggiest what you stand for, but I will be voting for you or any other candidate in St Helier #3, in protest at De Faye.

When you run TTS (btw, I think you might have some competition from existing members...) what will you do about the incinerator? Will you bring a rescindment motion?

Ive learnt in business you have no friends but i can honestly say politics is a dirty game.

And I'm afraid many of the new faces in the senatorial elections will get slaughtered in the hustings and by the media.

Sure, but when you run TTS, what will you do about the incinerator? Will you stop it going ahead, or will you allow the project to continue?
