Well this is what happens when you get Ministers who forget to focus on the Jersey the island, and instead focus on Jersey the 'world class' venue.

hi ahits,

a 12 metre high tower is exactly what it says on the tin! 12 bloody metres! and he didnt realise how high that is!
plus they reckon on getting 10000 punters to visit in the first year/ seven days a week, i phoned planning about rendering a granite wall and they told me i needed permission, yet you can build an adventure playground with 12 metre high structures without any problem? theres been no site notices placed anywhere, no public consultation. Guess what the main man at les ormes and freddy are old classmates!

Yeah, I was just looking at the website, it's a completely disgusting state of affairs.

At the very least the neighbouring residents should be able to block further development for a number of weeks by complaining about the site not being properly signposted with the planning application. Then of course that time can be used to take a closer look at what exactly has gone down behind closed doors...

It actually doesn't surprise me that Cohen failed to realise how high 12 meters is.  Pharaohs work in cubits don't they?

The Portelet monstrosity - "world-class" he says - is the final proof that he is as bad as the rest, and the little flashes of common sense he used to show were just beginner's errors. He turns down a Quinlan Terry on the next stretch of coast, then okays a naff bit of 1960's urban style for Portelet??? I used to think he might turn out alright in the long run, but no more.

I see they wanna to pull down the Mont de la Rocque Hotel in St Brelade and replace it with 14 apartments.

So another hotel is due to be changed to rubble.

So much for a booming tourist industry.  :-\

Well, he certainly managed to slip in approval for the adventure playground, inc. a 40 foot tower, without drawing any attention to it. Does Cohen's mate own Les Ormes?

If you all believe that the planning application for this 'adventure playground' is going to be seriously reviewed you should take a look at Pure Adventure's website- they have included this ridiculous crap and already taken bookings for this coming April.........!! the recommendations for this site mention avoiding any visual/noise issues in relation to the surrounding residents not to mention the wildlife. The planning have described the area as an unused 'dump' , I can assure you all that this was a wild natural space with a air of calm and serene beauty, now it has been destroyed in the name of corporate bonding!!! cohen, bosdet foundation & pure adventure you should be ashamed of yourselves!  This island isnt just for the finance industry (tax avoidance) to do as it pleases, ruining a natural space so a few bankers can enjoy themselves shouldnt be the remit of the planning department.

Stuck with him for another 3 years >:(

If he wants more people to live in St Helier he should lead by example and move there

It wasn't so long ago that he was saying developers would have to build better properties with larger rooms and reasonable gardens. now he's done a complete u-turn and saying they can cram as much as possible into a smaller space.

Good point. In all of Freddie Cohen's attempts to sell town as a nice place for millionaires to live, he never once mentions what he intends to do about drunken idiots shouting at the top of their voices in the middle of the street, after 2am in the morning.

I used to live near Madisons at the Hotel de France. As if the "doof, doof, doof" of bleepy squeak music wasn't bad enough until 2am, we then had to endure another hour of the drunken youth of Jersey shouting/swearing/fighting/urinating whilst trying to get taxis. Yeah, I'd give up a nice country pad in St Mary to live through that!

Cohen needs a reality check.

Only 3am? You were lucky. The average time the drunken shouting dies down during the weekends in my part of town is now 4am.

But certainly, if some of our senior politicians had to live in St.Helier, rather than out in the countryside, we'd probably see a little more realism in their schemes and policies.

I don't understand at all any fuss about late-night (early morning) noise or loud behaviour in town. I live right in the centre - within a hundred yards of where I live there are eight pubs and two nightclubs and it is very rare that I even notice the noise... Compared to Dalston, where I used to live, where we could choose which of several nearby blues dances to go to on a Saturday night by opening the windows and listening out, or Brighton, where we could go onto the terrace at closing time and see big punch-ups outside the local club most nights, St. Helier is remarkably peaceful, tranquil and (to be honest) pretty boring. In the three years I have been living at this address I have seen only two fights and, tho' the noise can be sometimes slightly raucous, people are usually moving from one place to another and are past fairly quickly.
Having been bought up in the country I would not give up the convenience of town, of ease of shopping, of the absence of commuting, because of some myth about late night noise, misbehaviour and violence.

(And Madison's eh? DJ in a car? Takes me back, that does... I think my dad told me about that place...)

Well there you go. You don't understand because you don't hear the noise. Others do.

I live on the edge of town, a good 20-something minute walk away from the nearest nightclub, and at weekends the screaming and shouting of drunks comes in waves. There are the first batch, returning home after they've fininshed in the pubs, at roughly 11.00 till 12.30. There there's a second batch who've left the clubs early, which lasts between about 1.00 - 2.00, and then there is the final batch, after the clubs shut, which lasts  between about 3.00 and 4.00.

A couple of years ago it was so bad that to get anything resembling a decent chunk of unbroken sleep, I had to force myself to stay awake until 4.00am most nights, because it was the only way of getting a guaranteed 4 solid hours of sleep. And after that 4 hours of peace, I had to get up and do a days work....and when I returned home in the evening, I'd flake out for a couple hours until about 9pm. And that went on for an entire summer.

So you may not have heard any drunken noise, despite your proximity to pubs and clubs, but there are people on this island who do have to suffer it, sometimes to the extent that it completely screws their quality of life. ...and for those people, I can personally assure you, the situation is far from being "some myth".
