WOOLWORTHS

Jersey's States is being asked to find almost 290 thousand pounds to compensate ex- Woolworths staff.

Senator Alan Breckon wants more than double the sum that's already been asked for.

Earlier this month Deputy Southern said he wanted almost a hundred and forty thousand pounds from the government to compensate ex- Woolies workers.

But Senator Breckon wants this increased by 150 thousand pounds.

It's to cover what workers would have got had they been given their notice.

It's not yet clear whether Woolworth's administrators are paying this. And Senator Breckon wants local employment advisors to investigate.

41 islanders who worked for the failed chain would qualify for money if they'd worked in the UK.

It's thought the proposal will be debated in the States next week.

I think this incredibly cheeky.  This is tax payers money!

If you round it up to GBP300,000.00 it would take GBP10,000,000 of goods to be sold to replenish that tax with 3% GST.

What planet are Southern and Breckon living on?

Their view on ethics costs money.

Frank Walker was wasting this amount every year on his personal PR monkeys.

There is wasted money all around I cannot argue with that, but this particular request is a goodwill gesture and I am sure it will create annoyance for many other people who have been in a similar position in the past and have had no hand outs.

Not clever.

While I do have sympathy for the redundant Woolies staff, making special cases undermines the law in a pretty wholesale way.

If you want redundancy payments, introduce the necessary law. make it retrospective if you like, but pick a point in time and give everyone equal treatment, please.
