By the sound of it maybe if the Police took a more active role things like this wouldn't happen :-\

Fritz - "sending my Lad to sort them out"? What's the definition of sorting out then?

In our road we've had one old man whose windows were smashed and had paint thrown at his house. Another family who were terrorized by a gang of youngsters who kept banging on their windows and climbing over their garden wall to smash up everything in their garden, windows smashed in blocks of flats, eggs etc thrown at houses. The victims have done nothing to provoke this kind of behaviour. The gangs just pick on someone at random and make their lives a misery.

It is a major problem because these "children" know their rights and unless they are actually caught in the act - if you see them and can identify them is irrelevant - the police now want evidence eg photographs of them committing the crimes - which is practically impossible and of course the police take so long to answer a call (if they do at all) that they rarely catch them in the act.

Your lad could either use his diplomatic skills, (being a States member), to convince them to stop what they are doing.
He could threaten to increase the tax on eggs, thereby pricing their ammunition out of the,"Pocket-money range".
The possibilities are endless.
What,s the point of forcing your lad into a position of power, if he is not prepared to use it?

Or he could use his position to do something pro-active for youth work in St Saviour.

Yes, we have deviated somewhat from the topic under discussion. People often complain that the States are totally unprepared for eventualities when it is clear to the public that there will probably be consequences to certain events. In our current situation the public were quick to foresee unemployment (the ministers thought this recession would not affect us greatly) - the public were correct as it turns out and now some people are wondering if this unemployment and general lack of money is going to cause crime (and in particualr burglary) to increase.

They want to know what provision the Home Affairs Minister has made to counteract this, if it happens (no one is saying it is definitely going to happen). The reply was basically that he has made no provision to tackle this and appears to feel that there is no reason for the public to be concerned. Well, if he's right and we don't see an increase in crime then that will be great but if it isn't then he may find the current level of policing is inadequate and struggle to cope. In any case, he has been questioned about it and is now aware that the public are concerned and keeping a close eye on his election promises to stand up for law and order and protect the public. Time will tell.

If the problem happens , and no one says it is going to happen , but if it does , have we or have we not given due consideration in the event that it does , or perhaps does not, to ensure that if it does we have adequate cover even if , and i repeat if, it does or does not happen?

Sheesh Nellie you need a holiday!

I think I see!
What Nellie appears to be saying is that things that are blindingly obvious to the general public are being overlooked by the States who don't, it would apear, see things in the same light. But, if those concerns raised by the public don't come to pass, then the States will have been right all along. So, in tonight's Pravda when Ozouf is talking about maybe 1000 jobs being lost, because that was the number lost in the last recession, is he stating a worse case scenario or just echoing what the general public have been saying for weeks? Or, in his informed position, is he paving the way for even greater job losses in Jersey?
Confused? I can't wait for next week's episode.
