Why is he standing
« on: April 02, 2009, 10:16:08 AM »
I may have missed something, but why was it news worthy that the Connetable was going to stand again for a second term? Like many other constables he appears to be just enjoying the ride on the gravy train. I stand to be corrected.

Take a seat and be grateful. Obviously the Connetable himself has been asked by many people (His wife & family) to stand again (because it brings home the bacon) and represent the parish ( who by his middle of the road approach couldn't be bothered) to kepp up the good work (get out from under people's feet and do something). So what? This is after all Jersey.

Yes, ignorance is bliss in your case.

Is it not quite simple?
Say we take the constable of St Helier as a yardstick , or in his case a two and a bit yard stick ,,,,,,,, he gets the lot , 48k a year for representing 30000 people or should i say , the 5000 who bother to vote . Should he not get 48000 of your English pounds , divided by the potential voters and multiplied by actual votes received? So in his case he would receive £8k a year .
The deputy womble would receive approximately on an island wide basis , given that St Marys  has only 400 voters , around about  2/6 a week , which would be about right , most of the rest of the muppetteers would be worth about one thousand a year .
To be fair deputy Gorst is in New York right now at our expense , trying to figure out more ways to give money to corrupt governments in need (name one that is not) ,and will no doubt , receive a medal of honour from Nigeria for giving them a hand out they had not sent out an email soliciting.
It truly beggars belief that we actually pay anything to these power hungry inadequate s,
....do they not make enough out of their sideline directorships? Their quango positions ? I would never suggest that they abuse their roles further than that , such as slipping in to the odd free holiday , or gifted property elsewhere , that would just be curmudgeonly.
Major overhaul required , we are looking a tad more greasy , than a very greasy thing that has been double greased with extra brylcream on top

I do not believe past politicians should be absolved from  the views above ,If the JFSC had any control of the States (Which thank god they do not , but watch this space) I wonder how many they would find  "fit for purpose"  I suspect , less than 50%

Well at least the current Constable of St Helier has

- fought the Parishes corner over the parish paying lighting costs
- finally resolved the idiot street cleaners (parish/public roads situation)
- kept parish rates steady, and made sure the parish is run efficiently

and not

- used parish funds to fight a personal court case
- gone overboard on spending for decorations, flooring etc for the parish hall
- seen the ratepayers as a source of extra funds to deal with overspends

like, perhaps, some of his predecessors?

One of his claims to fame is doing 120 on the avenue, so he certainly had some go in him time past, at least he has stopped having a go a cyclists as is the way with most Connetables.

Really? Have you a cast-iron source for that? A speeding fine maybe?

I don't think it is that likely; and yes, I do know him from way back in the 1970s, even if I haven't met him for some time except by the odd email.

http://www.thisisjersey.com/2011/09/01/constable-pays-parish-back-after-irregularities/

When recently elected  (unopposed)  he stated that Constables were good in the States because they were used to looking after the Parish coffers, one wonders what benefits he got from the States work now?

PS It looks like I know the guy better than you do!
