Carolyn Labey, member of an extended family who own large tracts of Grouville (and who have done so for as long as one can remember)...
So what?  Even if property ownership was any indication that you're not a good politician, which I think is quite ridiculous anyway, are you saying that if you're related to somebody who owns property that's also an indication??

What does the Dep. own herself? Don't be so foolish to assume that everybody agrees, or even gets on with their family.

I have family members living in Jersey I haven't seen in 20+ years, would you hold their wealth (and I've no idea what that might be) against me, if I were to stand for election?

The seeming hatred of anybody with any financial wealth in this island by some people, makes me worry; these hate filled people have a vote, and thanks to the internet have more of a voice than ever before, but they still don't have a clue it seems.

Dont get your PJ's in a twist.

Point is if you are a well educated, hard working, intelligent person who has an interest in politics and would like to make a positive contribution to the community and feel that being a Deputy in your local parish is a good place to start you may well be disuaded if you knew that the other candidiate could potentially draw upon a huge extended network of family and friends come election time. It may not be real but it is a perception. What other currency can a candidate trade in?

And to be clear, if you have me down as a fool or hate filled envy merchant, then you might want to re-read some of my posts but there are others on this forum who touch upon these particular issues quite eloquently from time to time.

Actually the idea of the PJ fool is growing on me so I take that back.

Say nothing fat fingers. I know what your'e thinking.

Dumblebee - re JEP "This is Jersey" comments. I tried at least 8 times to make a positive, totally uncontraversial comment on that website to Mr Cartier's letter re the Senator Syvret house search, to show there were people out there who agreed with him. My comments were zapped each time by the JEP. This leads me to question whether or not we are being manipulated into believing that one viewpoint or another is the "public" point of view by the JEP?

...What other currency can a candidate trade in?...
Policies? Ideas?

Not meaning to pick on any one candidate/member, but I happened to be looking at Jeremy Machon website a couple of days ago, so it's fresh in my mind.  www.jeremymacon.com

The site is dominated by a picture of the smiling Dep. for St Saviour No.1 in front of St Ouen's Bay (?), below this is the navigation frame which disappears of the screen, and which you need to navigate around before you can use it to navigate the site.

Once you get to his various pages they're again falling of the screen, and difficult to read scrolling past in a letterbox viewing frame.  Luckily his page on policies does fit into a single screen "Page yet to be updated" ::) Oh well, so he hasn't formed any policies yet, at least he's thinking about them; lets take a look at his Ideas page "Page to be updated" ::)

He's not the only one he can be accused of image over content.

I have been reading this news item on 'This is Jersey' and some of the letters that have been released online.  I don't think Stuart Syvret is as popular with people as some of his supporters make out.  In fact I am getting the impression that since he released that Police Report he will never be forgiven for it.

I was replying to Dumblebee's comment as above - and asking how much credence we should be giving to supposed "consensus" of opinion? Unfortunatley there are very few avenues open to the public for airing their views and having sensible discussions of current issues. When replies are zapped or unreasonably censored, the perception of public opinion becomes distorted.

Unfortunately it is a catch 22 situation as if we make no comment then the powers that be are deluded into thinking that we haven't noticed or are happy with what they propose.

Only that rather than family background, or their pretty smile, it'd be nice to have politicians and candidates with policies and vision.

Here we go again, sooner or later the money and wealth had to come into this post. Does not matter who is shacked up with who or who has got the money or not. The issue was about the arrest and nothing else.

This particular issue is actually about whether Deputy Labey's mothers comparison, as reported in the JEP, between a police search of her daughters home and the Luftwaffe dropping thousands of tons of ordinance on innocent people, killing thousands in the process, was in anyway reconcilable.

The CoM, and therefore I assume what you consider to be 'the establishment', are promoting Civil Partnerships for same sex couples; something Sen. Syvret told me he would not support.

Why do you think it's disgusting, wasteful and stupid to allow homosexuals equal human rights?

If true, Stuart must be very conflicted given his latest campaign for human rights. Maybe he has a narrow definition of 'human' which helps him to salve his conscience.

The bottom line in all of this is why are we the public accepting that is ok for the states police force to raid "without a warrant"anyones private residence.  What ever has become of this once pleasant island.?

Have you read the statutory law and understood the customary law?

I think not!
