Goose Green
« on: July 03, 2009, 11:48:29 AM »
On the BBC web site there are some photos of Goose Green and what has happened with just one down pour of rain. Remember how the States were being told time and time again that building on a marsh is asking for trouble, well here is the result!

I know this development is repeatedly called the "Goose Green Marsh" development - but it is not on the Marsh. These houses were built on fields (not the Marsh) on the opposite side of the perquage.

I do not know what the drainage was like from these fields (there is the perquage stream running down to St Aubin's from Sandybrook between it and the Marsh). Although I would not be surprised if parts of it were reclaimed from the sea at the same time as the Marais de St Pierre (the proper name of the Goose Green Marsh), certainly the upper end is significantly higher than the Marsh, which might suggest the cause of this is simply bad design.

The fact that drainage, (Pumping stations etc to be installed as part of Planning,s remit), hasn,t been completed yet might also have something to do with it.

Ah, yes. They were supposed to put in a pumping station as a "gesture of goodwill" or somesuch down at the beach end of the perquage, weren't they?

Seems to me that this fiasco is a result of:

1.  Building on a site known to be prone to flooding, and
2.  Contractors' greed to make a quick profit.

I'll be charitable about the States planning control aspect.

They managed well enough at "Les Marais" in St Clements didn't they?

OMG what a tit!

Les Marais WAS a marsh! (Look it up in the annals of history, within living memory, it is one of two populated areas which have been densly built on).

Agreed Gordon I remember it being a marsh when I was at primary school in the 1960s as was the site of le Rocquier School. (I lived close by to both)

Building adequate drainage solved the problems at those sites.

So why are these

flooding now?

Answer: Because greedy developers and negligent planners could not be arsed to factor in the cost of drainage.

Densely, by the way and not densly

In French, "les marais" means "the marsh".

So, either they were on acid when they named it in the 60s, or it was a marsh.

There is an area just off the right bank of the River Seine in Paris called "Les marais". It too was once a marsh. I think it's safe to say we're talking about marshes here...

Do not be critical as once again you have missed a verb in a sentence.

Let me benefit from your superior knowledge and tell me where the "missing verb" should be, please.
