Now a rise in Social Security a certainty
« on: July 22, 2009, 07:36:38 AM »
Ian Gorst says on the radio that Social Security will probably have to rise now to pay for pensions. Add this to tax can the last person to leave please turn the lights out?

Hardly comes as a surprise given everyones living longer...

If anyone else received the 'annual survey' questionnaire they posed a few options in there to gauge public opinion

- reducing the value of the current pension
- increasing the age at which pension is payable
- means testing
- increase the rate of social sec
- increase the threshold over with social sec contributions are payable

Some of the above have to happen. Preferences, anyone?

Raise the age at which the pension is paid.

Old age pensions were originally brought in (in the UK) at an age above the average person life expectancy. This is why it's called in insurance - it was insuring us against running out of savings. The idea that we should expect to live on it for twenty years or more is a modern illusion.

is the annual survey online also or is it handed out to a fair proportion of our society ?
i have only ever received a survey about heritage which ended with a question about how many people were living in our accommodation.

I have already mentioned a few months ago on one of our threads that I think Means Testing would come about and I was not surprised to see it on the form I was sent to fill in.

The only survey I ever receive is from my bank! But with regards what I prefer then its to increase social security payments and also the threshold. I dont want to arrive at 65 even though its a long way to go and then have to continue working. Its bad enough thinking that you have to work till then to be able to enjoy a meager retirement unless you are fairly well off, the way I see it all i have to look forward to is having paid off a mortgage and having no rent to pay, i feel sorry for those who wont even be in that position. But on the upside if I retire single or with a wife who is willing then i will f off to somewhere were it doesnt cost so damn much to enjoy my retirement years boozing in the sun on my meager states pension that will stretch further than it will here!

apparently if you retire out of the island they will give you a lesser pension, how wrong is that.

Is this something new?  I was not aware that you would get a lesser pension if you retire off-island.  At present you get a cost-of-living rise if off-island.  If there were to be any cost-of-living increases like there used to be.

Scratches head ::)....Hmm must go and get some information I think.

It does seem strange if true because your states pension is not going to be enough to pay income tax on unless it is also subject to social security payment. And not only that but I would have thought the states would be glad to get rid of you so you cant claim any further income support, unless of course that also goes out of the window when you retire!

(some of those who administer the system are also miss informed)
