I would like us all to discuss other states members so will decline an offer to rant about this man, if it is a man.

I attempted to post this on SS blog yesterday, but no success:

Regarding breach of data protection law, it's worth listening to what MP John Hemming said on the CTV interview   ".....regards the nurse and child abuse cases, ...OBVIOUSLY I can't name the ALLEGED perpetrators...."

Hemming went on this week to name the nurse in the House of Commons when he was enjoying parliamentary privilege. So the point I'm making, which SS of course won't respond to, is that even his big buddy Hemming knew he OBVIOUSLY couldn't name an ALLEGED perp in the media.

If there had been true Parliamentary Privilege in our States Chamber Senator Stuart Syvret  would have been able to name the alleged perpetrator there, the same way as The Rt Hon John Hemming, Birmingham, Yardley  named him in the House of Commons at the Palace of Westminster recently.

I was fortunate enough to have a private conducted tour of The Palace of Westminster given by a man who had worked in UK politics for most of his adult life and he explained the importance of Parliamentary Privilege to our group.  If a member has a grievance he can thrash it out in debate without the worry of being imprisoned for slander and whatever else might befall him.  It is a safety valve and a means of bringing things into the light that may otherwise lay dormant and festering, recognise the inference.  How refreshing it would be to allow a real debate in the House instead of the dumbed down versions we get now where things are hinted at and we hear snide remarks and in jokes coming from all angles.  Parliamentary Privilege has nothing to do with being able to call other members nasty names it is a way of getting important prickly issue into the open which may offend some people and make them cringe but surely it is far better than boxing that skeleton into a cupboard in the cellar and continually checking the lid has not opened and that nothing has fallen out for fear of being found out.  Feel the fear and do it anyway!

If the Parliamentary Privilege aspect of genuine government was not available to Senator Stuart Syvret in Jersey and he did not receive a listening ear from any of our Judiciary, States Members and the like, where was he supposed to go and voice his concerns?  The village pump?  He did the next best thing in his eyes, to get the message across, within citizen media and blogging on the internet and the rest is history. The people, in Jersey and elsewhere, obviously wish to know what he has to say as those that realise it is there read it.

Cali

If the case is so strong why wasn't it pursued?

It is likely because of a lack of evidence.

I fail to see why it was necessary to name the man in order to have a debate.

And further more, why did he sit on the report for so long before so doing? Oh yes. That's right. He was frit (to use a Thatcher phrase).

Useful layman's guide to UK Parliamentary Privilege here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/82536.stm

Also makes the point that it comes with responsibilities and sanctions. it is not a carte blanche.

For anyone not familiar with the word 'frit' I attach a URL for a little clarification and to view the context it was used by Mrs Thatcher. This in order to continue with a conversation which does not throw slings and arrows but merely tries to light a path to more understanding between opposing perceptions and ideas.

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Margaret_Thatcher

and if you can't be bothered to view the URL here is the phrase:

The use of 'frit', an unusual Lincolnshire dialect abbreviation of 'frightened' which Mrs Thatcher evidently recalled from childhood, was missed by MPs in a noisy chamber but heard very distinctly on the audio feed from the chamber.

This URL may give a more indepth understanding of Parliamentary Privilege if anyone is interested:

Can I ask a favour?

When quoting someone can members please use some kind of markup to distinguish between the quotes and your comments? Italics, for example.

I find many posts difficult enough to read due to the absence of punctuation and correct spelling, but it becomes almost impossible to make head nor tail of them when people blend quotes and invective.

Thanks :-)

Danrock said,

Spot on Danrock.

It gets better, because they are so clever and professional, they state that sitting around a table once a month with Jersey Finance ( to give them sound business advice ), if paid would be worth round £1.5 million should they be working in the office advising and running their banks. Therefore the original agreement requiring the banks to contribute hard cash was quashed by our Government.

Yep banking boys and girls maybe two years ago, but now its time to contribute to Jersey finance  Ltd. (you were supposed to put in fifty per cent right ) who wants your advice now ?

It gets better, speaking to a high ranking, very intelligent banker friend last evening he tells me he no longer tells people when out socially that he is a banker.

So Senator Ozouf, I hope the banking industry are paying for the trip to India and China ( which I agree with,  finance is the only real income Jersey has).

Who is paying ?

Surely not the families, or working people, who did not cause economic meltdown through high risk gambling and lack of due diligence.

I guess the easiest route is to put up GST on food and more taxes on fuel, masquerade green taxes as being necessary all hurting the not so well off.

To tag on to the end of this note, the more you tax the people, the less disposable income they have to spend, the more it affects small medium all business actually as turnover drops, so do taxes paid. Why should you care about them ( businesses?) you push your button ( or a folder does ) and here we go hey presto!  more money taken off the hard working people, who needs businesses to pay taxes when you can go direct?

There is some excellent news; the elections are every day getting closer. When you are really, feeling the pinch financially you will vote, why not register to vote now. I think you will be well pleased you did, it costs you nothing to register, unlike this  high spending Government, who will come for more, much more of your hard earned money.
