Patrick Ryan - Senatorial Candidate
« on: May 20, 2010, 12:28:49 PM »
Former Deputy Patrick Ryan has thrown his hat into the ring. Commentators on 'the vile blog' see him as the establishment candidate with some juicy gossip on clandestine meeting's between the former Chief Minsiter and PR Glen Rankine to support Ryan's cause. Who knows! Who cares? Point is can somebody who failed to get re-elected as a town Deputy last time round really expect people to take him seriously this time? I have no axe to grind with this fellow. His time in the States completely passed me by without a trace but what do others think? Is he another non-entity chancing his arm probably with a more realitic eye on his old Deputy's seat or can he make a real difference? LOL!
Pimp the States Chamber.

When in office he spent a great deal of time running his business, and I would expect this to continue. Not something I feel comfortable about. I did have need of his service and he was helpful and eventually got the problem sorted - which was junk mail, which I guess was partly his doing in the first place.

Loads of States Departments bought vehicles supplied by him, perhaps he really is the guy to take care of our interests in the same way as he looks after his own?

"The maintenance of the general country environment in our island is crucial to our quality of life. I am fundamentally against building in green fields. I am a 'line in the sand' supporter."

Never heard him speak out against all the crap that was built or planned when he was a member.

The environment is not crucial enough to warrant a policy from him though! Yet all States members are supposed to consider the environment as part of their remit. I guess it is when it suits them.

Shona Pitman asked the States to agree in principle that any candidate for the position of Senator, Connétable or Deputy should be required, at the time of his or her nomination for the position, to make a public declaration if he or she intends to stand for the post of Chief Minister after the election.

It didn't get through, of course.

POUR: 6 CONTRE: 37 OUT OF ISLAND: 1 EN DEFAUT: 1 NOT PRESENT: 8
Deputy Peter Nicholas Troy
Deputy Judith Ann Martin
Deputy Geoffrey Peter Southern
Deputy Patrick John Dennis Ryan
Deputy Shona Pitman
Deputy Ian Joseph Gorst

Patrick Ryan was one of those who VOTED for this proposition.

Good for him!

He must have changed tack then as when recently asked he said he would consider when and if he was in that the position to run for it.

Said tonight he wanted to be positive about the incinerator and thought we should take Guernsey's rubbish and put some of the money made towards the environment. Surely it would be cheaper and more sensible to let Guernsey sort their own rubbish problems out.

and where will we dump all the waste ash (and toxic ash) - yes there will still be some after incineration - an incinerator is not a Star Trek like matter disintegrator, although to hear some politicians speak, you'd think it was.

I asked this - but have not had a reply yet.

Dear Patrick

"Having been a States member for 6 years, I think ten fewer States Members would not be missed and would vote for reform."

I am interested in any more details to put "flesh on the bones" regarding where the 10 members will be taken from.

I would also be interested in any ideas you may have regarding the electoral boundary imbalance where a vote in St Mary (on the basis of electorate / places in the States) is effectively double that of most of the larger parishes. Guernsey as you know solved this by clustering smaller parishes together, thus retaining parish boundaries but attaining equitable proportions. The UK, of course, redraws electoral boundaries.

St Mary is therefore in some respect, heading towards what (pre1832 Reform Act) used to be termed "rotten boroughs", especially as the bulk of developments for housing fall in other parishes. Many people, when I've asked which is the smallest Parish, have said St Mary, based no doubt on its small population; it is, of course, St Clement, which surprisingly is still seeing proposed developments around Samares despite its bulging population.
