I think you have hit the nail on the head, Rico. Too many people in this island don't have the balls to stand up and be counted. So many that those who do, like you and me, and unlike Spartacus hiding behind his computer, get viewed as eccentrics by the herd who don't even want to know the difference between a wolf and a sheepdog, so long as they are spared having to think and speak for themselve.s

Since you are relatively new here , you will probably be unaware that I did write here under my own name for a few weeks .
That is until somebody phoned my wife and said I was being mentioned on the Syvret Blog as some sort of Facist/Right Wing lunatic etcetcetc.
So dutifully ,upon instructions from the war office , to protect her sensibilities because I mostly do not  have any , I  changed my name to Spartacus.
This obviously defeats your argument about keyboard warriors and had you asked Rico , he would have told you that I have always been an obnoxious knob and do not save it up just for Spartacus meanderings through the trollings of the brain dead.

I am very concerned about this kind of thing happening, and the polarisation into black and white which some of Stuart's supporters have, especially on his site - a "he who is not with me is against me" attitude, with a crusade against any criticism.

Could you tell us if it was a supporter or Stuart himself who was making that kind of remark?

Gandalf the grey/Gandalf the white /and now.........Gandalf the shite!
Just kidding Tony.

Where does the 30K figure come from?

I have seen no breakdown; it just seems to have been magically plucked out of a hat. And not a wizard's hat either!

Good point, it is probably considerably more:

12 Parishes
12 Hustings + others involving parish staff
12 Parishes open all day for election
Printing of electoral lists, voting slips.

Well the Parishes would be open most of the day anyway; it is the extra time in the evening that costs.

I see in my crystal ball that a Deputy will be asking Philip "efficiency" Ozouf to provide some figures!

Sorry if this comes over all Rico but this has already been dealt with on 25/05/10:

3.14   Deputy T.M. Pitman of the Chairman for Comité des Connétables regarding the likely cost of organising and running the forthcoming Senatorial by-election:
Will the Chairman advise the Assembly of the likely cost of organising and running the forthcoming Senatorial by-election?

Connétable K.P. Vibert of St. Ouen (The Chairman for Comité des Connétables):
I am unable to answer this question with real certainty because the information is not only held across the 12 Parishes, but by the Judicial Greffe as well as the Treasury.  I can say that the Parishes receive approximately £20,000 in expenses; this to cover the manning of each polling station.  These expenses do not account for the preparation and dismantling of the polling stations by Parish employees, or for the cost of the paid employees of the Parish who assist with the running of the poll.  I am aware that this figure could possibly add a further £6,000 across the 17 polling stations.  Over and above this must be added the costs of advertising as well as the administration costs of postal voting.  It must also be noted that over 150 volunteers, together with many members of the Honorary Police, give up their day to assist.  I am sure that I would not be exaggerating if I say that the forthcoming by-election will cost in the region of £30,000.

3.14.1         Deputy T.M. Pitman:
I hope I am not stretching the issue of costs too far, and I was aware that the Parishes do not in fact get back all the money they outlay, but given the huge and embarrassing problems experienced in the U.K. with people being unable to vote before the polling stations closed, can the Chairman confirm to the Assembly that he and his colleagues would not support the opening times of polling stations being reduced, possibly under the justification of cutting costs in future?

The Connétable of St. Ouen:

I believe that we are bound by the law which this House has passed and until such law is brought for debate then I am not in a position to comment on behalf of all the Connétables.

Do try to keep up Prof!

Not much of a breakdown of expenses then, just a lump figure to cover costs, and no way of knowing whether those costs are met, exceeded, or could be obtained more cheaply (putting up and taking down booths) by tender.

All in all, something of a fudge compared with Teignbridge where the auditors get it all nicely itemised.

It's rather like the situation with the JMT (later Jerseybus), where they said - we'll provide a bus service for you for schools, oaps etc, just give us £x pounds and we'll not give you any breakdown of those figures.

Part of the inaccesibility of proper accounting information was why they didn't get the contract.

Who did,nt get the contract > what contract? What are you talking about?
The fact that you have chosen a beard in your Avatar leads me to believe you are some sort of hairless person lacking in a chin!
My momma always used to say "never trust a man with a beard or a moustache"  , (some of her other comments were stolen by Forest Gump ,, copyright pending , lawyers notified)
It really would be a good thing if you and batty buoy could get together to draw a conclusion , but i doubt the pair of you could draw a pair of curtains.

I gather SSS has had the bill for his failed job application thanks to opposition from the CAB, and he has now pulled a sicky, so we are still having to support the muppet while those in genuine need suffer.
