Support to raise retirement age
« on: March 25, 2008, 12:10:55 PM »
Another news item, and this is obviously because of a higher life expectancy now.

Now I know a lot of people that have retired early do end up working again simply because of the boredom.

But what do you think?

I also guess a lot of people who are not on final salary pensions may not have much choice on the matter anyway.  :-\

"Support to raise retirement age.

Increasing the retirement age in Jersey could benefit the island's businesses, a charity has claimed.
A public consultation has been looking at ways for the island to deal with the challenges of its ageing population.

About 75% of those who took part in the consultation said they were in favour of increasing the retirement age.

Daphne Minihane from Age Concern Jersey said she believes the island's older people could make a valuable contribution to the workforce".

A related issue is a corresponding need to outlaw compulsory retirement before States pension age. At present you can be thrown out of a steady job at an age when you will go straight to the back of every queue for another, and yet have years to wait for a pension to live on.

Some firms do this and it is wrong.  Protection for workers in the private sector is very flimsy.

People should save more and then they can retire earlier.

Very true, people do rely on the State a lot nowadays.

Some of us are unable to save due to the extortionate rents and general cost of living. We don't live, we exist!

I agree, the trouble is, it is difficult for many to survive even on good wages.  We really need to get inflation under control in Jersey.

It is a million dollar question....  The problem is inflation in Jersey is like a runaway train.  GST could really make it a serious problem also.....

I can't see an end to it. I have watched (like everyone else) this island go steadily downhill since I was a teenager. I can't think of any aspect of life that has improved at all. Everything just seems to get worse! Or am I looking at Jersey in the 70's through rose tinted specs?

It all depended as to whether you got onto the property ladder when you were younger (in my opinion).

Property inflation has always been double salary inflation and this is where the problem now lies....

Aah ! Shouldn't have signed over house to first husband should I ! Never mind , would much rather be scratching a living than go back there again.
