Deputy Southern under fire by Traders
« on: July 12, 2008, 03:58:35 AM »
"Plans to make all businesses print the amount of GST they are charging on till receipts have been shelved following criticism from retailers.

Deputy Geoff Southern announced in the States this week that he was withdrawing his proposition because he wanted to speak to traders.

The St Helier Deputy had come under fire from the Chamber of Commerce and some individual retailers for not speaking to any of them before taking his proposition to the States.

They claimed that a change in the law now would mean them having to pass on GST to customers instead of absorbing it. They said it would be too difficult to declare how much GST they were charging and not pass it on".

And this isn't the first proposal he has brought in thats been ill thought out.

Why is it ill thought out?  Surely printing the 3% sales tax on a till receipt is a no brainer?

Can I just ask a question if there are any supporters of the JDA on here or anywhere for it matters?

Why have the JDA promised to get rid of GST in the elections in 12 weeks time but at the sametime Geoff Southern is demanding GST on till receipts now?

Why are they saying that they are going to do one thing at the sametime as doing another thing that is contrary to their manifesto and more or less confirms that GST is here to stay?

I think this carries on from the comment of listing all the troubles but having no foresight to suggest any remedies. ???

Good question.  Beyond the JDA though.
