Anyone work for a local company that was set-up by a 1.(1).k?

Could someone name "over a dozen significant and diverse businesses (largely outside finance) that have been established by our 1(1)K residents and their families"?

Just want to see the facts + stories behind these statements.

We could fit loads of housing on some of the space they take up.

IE: 200 tax-paying occupants in the space one tax-dodger?

The owner of Trinity Manor who was / is the boss of Redrow built the luxury flats (Park Heights)after buying an old hotel up old St. johns Road. Derek Warick ( wrong spelling) racing driver has Honda car showroom. The old Governer Sir Wilks is on the board of the company that Tom Scott used to take over Ann Street Brewery, Le Riches etc. Probably transfered to another crowd now. The same names keep appearing, rather like celebrity shows on TV.

Exactly.

I can think of 1(1)K'er, who shall remain nameless, who runs the finances of a major well known UK business from his garage in Jersey.  You would never think that some these mighty corps are run from a garden shed.  Saves them a lot in tax though.

All Geoff Southern wants is for the rich to pay more for the benefit of the poor. People should be supporting him and the JDA they represent social democratic justice for all.
Vote the JDA

Everybody wants the rich to pay more so it sure as hell aint just a JDA idea.  They would be a disaster in power, they only care about the Unions.

£22m wealthy tax 'shortfall'

It's being claimed that wealthy residents in Jersey should be contributing an extra £22m a year in tax.

Deputy Geoff Southern has based the figure on information provided by the Treasury.

Although the number of wealthy immigrants has risen to 149, the amount of tax they're paying has fallen from £10.7m in 2004 to £8m today.

With the target of 20% tax on the first £1m of declared income - Deputy Southern calculates the annual contribuntion from the wealthy should be around £30m a year.

He certainly hates 1.(1)Ks......

Seems to me that Southern is just trying to get a clear picture of what is going on.  Which is a good first step in getting things right, and creating a tax system which is fair to everyone.

Currently is would appear that we have some 1(1)Ks paying far more than others, and at least one paying no tax at all - according to Syvret.

If the system worked this way for people earning modest salaries, there would be outrage.

Personally, I don't think it is right to attack 1.(1).Ks just before an election.

This is actually a Comptroller of Tax Issue.  Not a Manifesto issue for the JDA.

(But thats what I think).

The Comptroller of Tax just collects tax.  Deciding types and rates of tax is down to the politicians.  Any changes in tax law has to be voted on, the comptroller has no role to play in that.

But he is claiming that tax revenue has gone down so that has to be a Comptroller issue.  Are you saying the States have reduced it?

I know a couple of 1.(1).K's and they have spoken to me about leaving Jersey anyway.  Other places around the World are even cheaper for them than here now.  Geoff Southern is walking into dodgy territory here.

Why can't they start taxing property developers like Dandara more?   Its the capital gainers that pay no tax that piss me off.

No, I am saying that laws need to be changed to ensure that everyone pays their fair share.

What do you mean by "Comptroller issue"?

The point here is that Southern wants to find out exactly why revenues from 1(1)Ks are lower than expected.  I don't think any of us know the answer to that question, and I'd be interested to know why, in fine detail.

I understand it is an agreement when they come over.  They are under contract.  If it is agreed that they payer a fiver for every £1,000 then that’s it, signed and sealed.

The trouble with this is that 1.(1).Ks can get up and go just as quick as they came and I know a few who got away from a labour Government.  If they think Jersey will be getting another Socialist administration, or feel intimidated by letters in the paper and TV interviews against their tax payments by local politicians.  It doesn't take much for them to say **** you, we are off to another more welcoming place.

149 people under this wing is not many to be honest and it shows that Jersey is not the only place for the wealthy anymore.

This is why I believe it is a comptroller of income tax issue and not a political election issue, which Southern hinted at in Talk Back last Sunday.
